One evening we heard a presentation from a group of ideological Jewish settlers who live in the settlement of Ma’ale Adummim. Ideological settlers use religious and nationalist arguments to justify the existence of settlements and their own presence in the West Bank, as opposed to “quality-of-life” settlers who are motivated to move to the West Bank primarily for economic reasons.

In Ramallah our group visited The Democracy and Workers Rights Center in Palestine, another Partner in our PC(USA) program. The group there welcomed us very warmly even though we were a few hours early and caught them off guard. We heard from DWRC worker Jumana Dabis as well as Dr. Hamdi Al Khawaja, and Raed Sadeq, all of whom took great patience and time answering our many questions.

In Jerusalem, Jeff Halper talked with us about the history and standing of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. This talk preceded a bus tour of East Jerusalem where we saw the remains of family houses that had been demolished as well as the construction of future Israeli settlements, like this one , on contested Palestinian lands. The tour ended with a trip through the settlement of Maleh Adumim the largest Israeli settlement in the West Bank which is geographically located so as to block the possibility a contiguous Palestinian state.
